For the past 5 months, I have had the absolute privilege of training with a legendary Muay Thai champion right here in Brunei. Back in Thailand, Kru Haiqal competed in over 300 fights in his fighting career. He moved to Brunei in 1997 and started teaching Muay Thai in 2012. Sadly, he will be leaving Brunei very soon but I caught this exclusive interview with my humble yet totally bad-ass teacher before he leaves us.


What do you enjoy most about teaching Muay Thai in Brunei?

We are all friends in Brunei, it’s like a family. I like it, it’s not like teachers with students.

What is Brunei’s opinion of Muay Thai in Brunei compared to other martial arts like Taekwondo, Jujitsu?

It’s hard for Muay Thai to compete with other martial arts in a Muslim country like Brunei; they see people wearing short pants and sexy T shirts…
