Professional wrestling continues to strengthen the credibility of fighters wanting to test themselves in mixed martial arts.

Former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star Phil ‘CM Punk’ Brooks recently signed a multi-fight contract with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Brooks has no amateur wrestling background, but has trained in kempo (Japanese martial arts) and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

History suggests a background in martial arts or amateur wrestling will only enhance his prospects of making a successful transition.

UFC Hall of Famer and former professional wrestler Ken Shamrock made his name in Japan with Pancrase, and became the first ever King of Pancrase.

Ex-wrestler and mixed martial artist Dan Severn developed his craft in amateur wrestling and won multiple titles before becoming a professional UFC fighter in 1994.

Former UFC and current WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar is a former National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) amateur wrestling champion.
